Hello again from IIT. As you're moving through the enrollment process, I wanted to share a sample of more recent IIT activities, which I thought might be of interest to you:

• IPRO Projects Day Conference

The spring 2008 IPRO Conference highlighted the accomplishments of more than 40 IIT interprofessional teams representing close to 400 students from across the university, as well as invited teams from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, California State University Fresno, and Saginaw Valley State University. Projects include devices for assisting blind swimmers, a zero-energy lab, a cephalic cooler for cardiac arrest victims, and food safety, genetically-modified crops & protein engineering.

• International Business Plan Competition

Chemistry undergraduate Ryan Witthans and Chemical Engineering Ph.D. candidate Shabab Amiruddin took home the Microsoft Technology Pioneer Award at the University of San Francisco's International Business Plan Competition last week, where graduate student entrepreneurs from top schools around the world pitched their innovative new venture business plans to leading Silicon Valley venture capitalists, venture attorneys, and entrepreneurial executives. Their company, medLight, and its product, a fiber-optic blood sensor that monitors patients' conditions in real time, wowed judges and attracted the attention of venture capitalists.

• Bill Nye The Science Guy Comes to IIT

Bill Nye The Science Guy was a guest speaker at IIT this week. Nye, who has an ME degree from Cornell and doctorate degrees from Rensselaer and Goucher, began a dual career as an engineer by day and stand-up comic by night, and eventually transitioned into an exclusive entertainment career. He has appeared alongside Ellen DeGeneres and Alex Trebek in Universe of Energy, an attraction playing since 1996 inside Epcot at Walt Disney World.

We look forward to running into you on campus and to experiencing your unique contributions to the IIT community. As always, if we can assist you or your family in any way over the course of the coming weeks, please let us know.

Sincerely,

P.S. Once at IIT, my fellow birdwatchers amongst you should think about visiting Wooded Island. It's my favorite place to bird watch in Chicago. Its neighborhood, Jackson Park, is also home to the Osaka Garden — one of the best Japanese gardens in the city.
