April 18, 2008
Congratulations on your admission to Illinois Institute of Technology. As mentioned on the left-hand side, our 2006-2008 Bulletin describes our undergraduate programs. We offer 32 majors, over 50 minors, and a wide variety of special programs, including bachelor's/master's degrees that can be completed in five years, dual-degree options, combined undergraduate/graduate law and business programs, and study abroad opportunities. We have added several new degrees over the past year, including our new biochemistry program.
You will have the opportunity to enroll in two Interprofessional Projects (IPROs) while here. Now, in its eleventh year, the program continues to grow. This semester, IIT is hosting 45 IPRO projects led by teams of 6-15 students from a wide range of majors who solve real-world problems in industry, as well as from faculty research and student-initiated proposals. Each IPRO project withstands a rigorous selection process, and at the semester's end, each team is evaluated by industry professionals, faculty and student judges.
IIT students also commonly engage in undergraduate research directly with professors. This year, IIT established a new center for undergraduate research. The center, led by Dr. Erik Brey, Biomedical Engineering Professor, will help even more IIT students and faculty get connected with meaningful research collaborations both within and outside of IIT.
I am also excited about a new academic resource center that will be completed in June 2008. The new center, located in the northwest corner of Hermann Hall, will focus on providing drop-in tutoring for undergraduates in virtually all areas of math, science and engineering. The center will also host an undergraduate writing center and a state-of-the-art digital media center. It will serve as the HUB for academic advising on campus. It will also house a library of digital content to help students excel academically.
As we work together between now and August, I encourage you to become familiar with the curriculum bulletin. It serves as our contract to you. That is, if the major's curriculum changes after you enroll, you can still follow the curriculum listed in this bulletin until your graduation. But even more than a contract in the legal sense, it represents our commitment to you to provide the highest level of academic experience in the classroom, in the laboratories, and with your interactions and relationships with the faculty at IIT.
I look forward to meeting you in the weeks and months ahead. My office is located on the first floor of the building pictured above (IIT Main Building). I invite you to stop by to see me, or correspond with me any questions you might have at gosz@iit.edu.
Sincerely,
Mike Gosz
