A number of incoming students have contacted me recently regarding how they can best prepare for their IIT math courses. So I asked IIT's Gregory Fasshauer, Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Applied Mathematics, for some recommendations. Here's what he had to say:
- The textbook we use for all of our calculus courses contains three special review sections with explanatory material (make sure you read this!), exercises, answers to the exercises, and full solutions. Even before you have the chance to buy the book, you can access the review material directly at the publisher's Web site. On the left-hand side, select:
• Review Algebra,
• Review Analytic Geometry, or
• Review Conic Sections.
The algebra review is relevant to ALL incoming freshmen (science, engineering, psychology, business, architecture, humanities, social sciences), while the other two are mostly for students planning to take MATH 151.
- Dave Maslanka, Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics at IIT, has put together an extensive review of trigonometry on his Web site. This is excellent preparation material for MATH 151. Please note that there are no solutions provided for the review problems.
- You can look at the Web site for Adjunct Professor Patrick McCray's MATH 148 precalculus course. There you can learn which kinds of math you should have already seen and what will be part of MATH 148/151. The first half of MATH 148 can mainly be treated as review material for MATH 151 (the MATH 148 and 149 courses combined replace MATH 151).
- Though not IIT-specific, this Web site is a good resource, especially for the precalculus tutorial. However, you will need to install a Live-Math plugin to use parts of this tutorial site; you can download it here.
We hope these resources help you to be a successful and happy IIT student. As always, let us know if you have any questions, and we will see you at Summer Orientation 2008!
Sincerely,
Gerald P. Doyle
