We went to current students and asked them what the top 15 things were that they wish they had known before coming to college.  We thought you might enjoy learning from those who came before you.  Here's what they had to say:

  1. If you are having trouble keeping up with a professor in class, go talk to them during their office hours, or search for help elsewhere on campus, like in the Academic Resource Center (ARC).

  2. Do not procrastinate. All-nighters do not work no matter how much coffee you might drink!

  3. Take notes! Always do so, which means you always have to go to class. You also have to take a notebook to class with you.

  4. Back up your computer data!

  5. Never doubt yourself. Never think that you cannot do something. If you doubt yourself, what's to stop others from doubting you? If you start believing in yourself, it will show.

  6. Have fun, but keep it legal and non-obnoxious.

  7. It's not high school anymore (or wherever you were before coming to IIT). College is not easy and it takes work, but it can also be enjoyable. It's what you make of it!

  8. Take time out for you—studying non-stop will burn you out (eventually). Good off-campus activities include walking along the lakefront and going downtown.

  9. Explore. You will be in one of the greatest cities in the world and surrounded by some of the most interesting people, too.

  10. Prepare a schedule for yourself so you do not waste time.

  11. Sleep! Getting enough rest will really improve your grades and retention of information.

  12. College is a turning point in your life and it offers a fresh start. Most of you have not met one another yet. You can drop old habits and pick up new, better ones (if you want).

  13. Do not register for 18 credit-hours unless you really have to for your major. Some students find it painful!

  14. You can find time to study, go to class, complete and turn in homework, relax, party, and just have a good time, but you do have to examine your priorities beforehand to decide exactly what to do with your time.

  15. Do not hold back at all. This is your time to shine.

Have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend, and, as always, let us know if you have questions about the enrollment process.

Sincerely,

Gerald P. Doyle
