  IIT Architecture Overview and Rankings

IIT's College of Architecture draws strength from its proximity to Chicago's landmarks, its Mies van der Rohe heritage, and an award-winning faculty. With an enrollment of more than 500 students, the College’s NAAB-accredited, five-year professional Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) degree program combines design with a solid grounding in building technologies. New rankings place the College among the top 13 undergraduate architectural programs in the U.S., according to Design Intelligence Magazine, which developed these rankings by surveying more than 1,100 architectural firms across the country.

As an IIT architecture student, you'll earn your NAAB-accredited professional B.Arch. degree in five years, one year less than the alternative "4 + 2" program leading to a professional M.Arch. degree. We focus on materials, technology, and craftsmanship, and sustainability inspires our approach to the built environment. In IIT's College of Architecture, your first day of class takes place in a design studio at your drawing table in landmark Crown Hall. You'll spend your first three years working in a foundation studio sequence that prepares you for two more years of design study in advanced studios. Exploring the complexities of large scale projects, each advanced studio consists of fourth- and fifth-year B.Arch. students and advanced M.Arch. students. While each advanced studio student develops their individual design solution, all collaborate on a set of contemporary challenges defining the studio's comprehensive building project. From first year to fifth year, you will meet in studios taught by practicing architects.

Advanced studios are global in reach. No kidding, as the College offers a full semester of study in Paris and design studios that travel to distant places, including Brazil and China. Advanced studios have also traveled to many parts of the United States, East coast to West coast, to examine sites for their projects. In Crown Hall, the College hosts evening lectures and presentations by internationally recognized architects, critics, and historians.

A long heritage of architectural leadership and invention. A distinctive curriculum that reflects the real world. A distinguished faculty. And an immense architectural laboratory called Chicago, a global city. Together, these define an unsurpassed professional education for tomorrow's architects.
