Dear Colleague,
We have completed our Early Action I and II application deadlines, and have now moved into our "rolling admission" cycle here at Illinois Institute of Technology. We will continue to read and review first-year and transfer student applications through June 2009. First-year student applications received after February 4, 2009 will be reviewed within two weeks of their completion; decisions will then be mailed promptly to students. Our enrollment goals for the Fall 2009 entry term include 535 first-year students and 160 transfer students.
As we move forward within the current challenges presented by the global economy, we want you, your students, and students' families to know that the president and provost remain committed to IIT's long-standing tradition of both merit- and need-based assistance to families. We are committed to ensuring that adequate resources are available to our new and continuing students.
Let me briefly share some reminders of these initiatives, as well as some recent news on summer research at the university.
Financial Assistance
In addition to need-based assistance, we offer a range of merit-based and special scholarships, including:
• Heald Scholarship (up to $10,000 annually)
• University Scholarship (up to $10,000 annually)
• IIT/Project Lead The Way Scholarship — IIT will award IIT/PLTW Scholarships in the amount of $1,000-$2,500 per year for four years (five years for architecture). These scholarships are applicable towards tuition expenses at IIT and may be combined with other merit-based scholarships awarded by the university, provided that the total award amount does not exceed tuition expenses.
• IIT/International Baccalaureate Scholarship — IIT will award IIT/IB Scholarships in the amount of $1,000-$2,500 per year for four years (five years for architecture). These scholarships are applicable towards tuition expenses at IIT and may be combined with other merit-based scholarships awarded by the university, provided that the total award amount does not exceed tuition expenses.

CSL Undergraduate Summer Research
IIT's College of Science and Letters (CSL) is big on research opportunities for undergraduate students. Opportunities for students are available as early as the second semester of freshman year, and students are guided by world-class faculty. Last year, eight students were awarded $5,000 each through the CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipend program in order to conduct research on various subjects, including cancer, particle physics, and bioinformatics. The program is funded by groups such as the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health, and some of the research is done at Argonne National Laboratory or Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab).
To view a report on the 2008 CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipend program, which covers the projects in detail and explains the faculty members' roles, go here (PDF).
I encourage you to invite your students to consider the intellectual rigors and personal rewards of IIT's undergraduate programs. If you or your colleagues have any questions about the admission process at IIT, please contact me directly at 312.567.5203 or via email to doyle@iit.edu.
Sincerely,
Gerald P. Doyle
