Dear Colleague,
As I begin my third year at Illinois Institute of Technology, I am happy to share some good news about our academic programs, faculty, and the development of our neighborhood and community.
Recent Appointments — Among the exciting news on campus is the recent appointment of Alan Cramb who joined IIT in August 2009 as the new Provost. Prior to IIT, Cramb was Dean of the School of Engineering at RPI and former head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Cramb is the author of more than 190 publications and two patents.
In addition, R. Russell Betts has joined IIT as the new Dean of the College of Science and Letters. Prior to IIT, Betts was the Vice Provost for Planning and Programs at UIC, and a former faculty member at Oxford University and a group leader at Argonne National Laboratory.
I have had the pleasure of speaking to Provost Cramb and Dean Betts since their arrival and I know that they are committed to extending our working relationships with secondary schools and their faculty around the nation.
Operating a Green Campus — The Perfect Power Prototype—one of the most ambitious and comprehensive new endeavors at IIT—will redefine the way the university acquires, produces, distributes, and uses energy. This project, led by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and in partnership with the Galvin Electricity Initiative and Exelon, is funded in part through a sizable grant from the Department of Energy. The research project aims to model a Perfect Power solution to the country's energy problems, using IIT as a living laboratory.
Financial Assistance — In addition to need-based assistance, we offer a range of merit-based scholarships including:
• Camras Scholarships (full-tuition)
• Heald Scholarships (up to $10,000 annually)
• University Scholarships (up to $10,000 annually)
We are committed to ensuring that adequate resources are available to our new and continuing students.
I encourage you to invite your students to consider the intellectual rigors and personal rewards of IIT's undergraduate programs. If you or your colleagues have any questions about the admission process at IIT, please contact me directly at 312.567.5203 or via email at doyle@iit.edu.
Sincerely,
Gerald P. Doyle
